Show Notes

Vancouver Psychedelic Meetup is pleased to bring you a talk by Blake Rupert.

Blake shares his insights at the intersection of psychedelics and Buddhism. He will explore how we might integrate practices, enhance our epistemic and ontological foundations, and deeply ground ourselves in the unyielding present. Blake will consider how this knowledge can allow us to alleviate suffering, discover our true freedom, and surf the uncertainty in our lives.

Blake is an accomplished mentor who combines a Buddhist practice with psychedelic insights and nature-based wisdom. He has a BA from Dalhousie where he doubled majored in psychology and philosophy, studying topics like consciousness and the feasibility of producing thinking machines.

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others." - Marianne Williamson, A Return to Love: Reflections on the Principles of "A Course in Miracles"

Thoughts Without A Thinker, by Mark Epstein. A great introduction for westerners to buddhism, by a Harvard educated psychiatrist and one of the first westerners to learn practice modern buddhism. Note, in Blake's opinion the first half of this book is the most important as a historical account of buddhism. Epstein's notions of neuroscience is dated and he tends to overestimate the importance of Freudian theory.
